40 Scriptures to Shape Your Faith

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
Recently, World Vision's research found John 3:16 to be the most popular verse in the Bible worldwide. No wonder. This single verse captures the entire Gospel. I learned it in Sunday School as a child, as did my wife and many of you. It's often called the "Gospel in a Nutshell" for good reason. One verse, packed with everything we need to know about salvation. Let's unpack it.
First, notice the MOTIVE: "God so loved the world." Not because we were lovable. Not because we earned it. BECAUSE He loves us. Period. The word "so" speaks not only to degree but also to MANNER. God loved in this specific, sacrificial way… by giving what was most precious to Him.
Second, the ACTION: "He gave His only Son." As any parent knows, there's nothing you'd guard more closely than your only child. Yet God didn't hold back. He sent Jesus into a broken, rebellious, hurting world.
Third, the SCOPE: "the world." Not just the religious people. Not just the nice folks. THE WORLD. Including you. Including me.
Fourth, the CONDITION: "whoever believes in him." Whoever. That's incredible. No qualifications. No prerequisites beyond faith. Whether you're new to faith or a fifty-year veteran, this verse still applies to YOU.
Finally, the OUTCOME: "eternal life." This isn't merely endless existence. It's a QUALITY of relationship with God that begins NOW and continues forever.
Salvation is SIMPLE. No ceremony. No pilgrimage. Just faith. Just belief. Just saying yes to the One who already said YES to us.
