Day 30 | GOOD SHEPHERD
GOOD SHEPHERD

John 10:11,14-15
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

This is another of Jesus’ famous “I am” statements and follows yesterday’s writing about “Abundant Life.”

Back in those days, there were many sheep and many shepherds. Undoubtedly, some shepherds were good, and others... probably not so good. Their job was to protect and care for the sheep, as those little woolly animals were essentially defenseless. Their natural enemies—wolves and ravenous critters (like coyotes, where we live)—would be watching all day and night, looking for a chance to steal a sheep for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

As I shared yesterday, WE are like defenseless sheep when it comes to Satan and his minions, and therefore, we need a Shepherd too.

Here, Jesus comforts His followers by stating that HE is a good shepherd and then – prophetically – that He would lay down His life to protect His sheep.

I doubt the disciples fully understand the depth of that statement, which would be fulfilled later on the cross.

I can’t read this verse without reflecting on these verses from Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.”

The LORD loves us and wants to be our Shepherd. He wants to meet our needs and protect us. However, we must choose to let Him by agreeing to be one of His sheep.
Are you?

Prayer: LORD, thank You for being MY Good Shepherd. Amen
