Day 26 | LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED
LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED

John 14:1
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”

This remarkable chapter recounts what Jesus said to His disciples right after the foot washing and the first communion service… just days before His crucifixion. The disciples were troubled, upset, and worried. Jesus had just told them that one of them was a traitor and that He would leave them that night.

As with the disciples back then, Jesus never promises a life without trouble, but He did promise that we could be “untroubled” even in times of trouble.

Charles Spurgeon said: “Jesus didn’t say, ‘I’m happy you men are troubled and filled with doubts. Your doubts are wonderful.’ He takes no delight in the doubt and disquietude of his people. When he saw that because of what he had said to them sorrow had filled the hearts of his apostles, he pleaded with them in great love, and besought them to be comforted.”

Then Jesus said something radical: “Believe in God, believe also in Me”.

Consider that the disciples, Jews by birth, had already developed a belief in God. All their Scriptures (our Old Testament) were written to enhance their belief and trust in God.  Each of God’s names taught a different aspect of WHO He is:  Elohim (Creator), Adonai (Lord Master), El Roi (The God Who sees me), YHWY or Yahweh (“I Am”), Jehovah Rapha (The Lord Who heals), and more.

But now, Jesus is telling them to believe also in ME. Peter had said: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” (Matthew 16:16)

It had to have been hard for the disciples to accept Jesus as equal to the Father, but He was… and is.

Do you ever feel troubled? Follow Jesus' words here: “Believe in God, believe also in Me.”

Look at the Scripture and see all the verses that relate to God (and Christ) comforting, guiding, and caring for us, His children.

Prayer: Lord, thank YOU for making me one of Your children and ALL that that means. Amen.
