PROTECT US
Matthew 6:13
“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (NKJV)
“"Temptation” literally means "test," and it’s not always an invitation to do evil. God promised to keep us from any testing that is more than we can handle (1 Corinthians 10:13), and God does not “tempt” people to do evil (James 1:13). God does, however, allow His children sometimes to go through times of testing, which can strengthen our faith or reveal a need for stronger faith.
Here’s a question for you: when YOU are going through a tough time in life (maybe feeling tempted to do something wrong or dealing with something bad that has happened), do you run TO God or forget about Him?
When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert (Matthew 3), although He was physically weak and near starvation, He turned to God’s Word to defend Himself by quoting it to Satan and standing firm on the Word of God.
Jesus teaches us all to ask God to lead us not into temptation but to deliver us from the Evil One, which means protecting us from Satan and his followers. And don’t think they are weak… they are NOT. Satan is smarter than you and I are and has been deceiving even God’s people—Old and New Testament—for thousands of years… and he's good at it. (So, keep growing your faith, walking with the Lord, and praying this prayer.)
Next, a doxology: “For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.” Scholars dispute whether this was written by Matthew or added later by a scribe; either way, it is an excellent finish, and I’m glad it is included in many translations.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for Your protection, power, and glory. Amen.
