Day 10 | OUR FATHER

OUR FATHER
Matthew 6:9
“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.’” (NASB)
I’m sure you’ve memorized and can quote the “Lord’s Prayer,” probably in the King James version.
This opening statement is quite remarkable, as Jesus was teaching His Jewish listeners to call God, “Father.” Not a big deal to us today, but that was unheard of at the time. Father is an affectionate term that signifies relationship, closeness, and care. It’s very different from Elohim, or Jehovah, or YHWH, or Adonai.
But consider how much better it is that we can call Almighty God our (heavenly) Father.
Now, if you are one of the many folks who had a bad earthly dad, I’m sorry... and I understand that those memories might cloud your affection for your Heavenly Father. So ask your Heavenly Father to heal you of those thoughts, so they won’t undermine your relationship with Him!
“Hallowed be Your name” could also be translated: “let Your name remain holy.”
What Jesus is teaching here is that we need to remember WHO we are addressing in our prayer.
The third of the ten commandments that God gave to Moses, teaches us not to “take the Lord's name in vain.” Taking the Lord's name in vain means using God's name in a disrespectful or meaningless way, such as in cursing, false oaths, or hypocrisy. It highlights the importance of treating God's name with reverence and not misrepresenting His character or intentions.
Beginning our prayer as Jesus taught here makes perfect sense: we start by addressing “Our Father” and recognizing the HOLINESS of His name. Doing so puts us in a position to look to Him, believe in His capability, and ultimately acknowledge that HE is God and fully in charge.
Prayer: Thank You for being my Heavenly Father, Lord. Amen.
