A NEW OFFER OF REST FROM JESUS
Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
We people seem to thrive on activity. As the old song by the group Alabama said: “I’m in a hurry to get things done. O, I rush and rush until life’s no fun …”
Our Scripture today – words Jesus speaks to his followers – is one of comfort and promise. It’s a call to those who try to do life single-handed, to come to Him, the Lord Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, for rest for our souls.
But when we come, we must come as disciples, followers, willing to be guided by His yoke, not merely to get something. And ALL may come. “Whosoever will, may come.”
When some consider the yoke of Jesus, they get the wrong idea.
You see…
*The yoke of Jesus is easy and light compared to the yoke of others.
*The yoke of Jesus is easy and light as long as we do not rebel against it.
*The yoke of Jesus has nothing to do with worries forbidden to us.
*The yoke of Jesus does not include the burdens we choose to add to it.
EASY in Greek means “well-fitting,” like getting a pair of shoes that are JUST the right size.
Jesus says, “For I am gentle and humble of heart.”
It amazes me how many people do NOT realize that Jesus – the Son of God – came to earth to HELP us, not to condemn us.
“For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:17)
Jesus came to help YOU with whatever you’re going through in life. Take up the yoke He offers and see if it does not bring you true REST.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for ALL You did for me and everyone on the planet. I am coming to You now. Amen
