Day 12 | PRAYING FOR OUR DAILY NEEDS
PRAYING FOR OUR DAILY NEEDS

Matthew 6:11
“Give us this day our daily bread.”

I love the Lord’s Prayer… or, more accurately, the model prayer that Jesus provided for His disciples to pray. One reason I appreciate it is because it conveys so much in just a few words. And here, Jesus invites us to also pray for our daily needs.

If you have children, you know that when a child is hungry, they are really hungry! And as a loving parent, you naturally meet that need at the right moment. Do you think your Heavenly Father would do any less? Matthew 7:11 says: "So if you, despite being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"

So here we are invited to ask our Heavenly Father for our daily needs… which include food, water, clothing, shelter, and more. Essentially, it’s appropriate to request your daily provisions. However, during the days Jesus walked on earth, His listeners generally thought He was referring to the Lord’s Supper or the Word of God as our “daily bread.”

Calvin described interpretations that overlook God’s concern for our daily needs as “exceedingly absurd.”

Another theologian, Clark, said: "The prayer is for our needs, not our greeds. It is for one day at a time, reflecting the vulnerable lifestyle of many first-century workers who were paid daily and for whom a few days of illness could bring disaster."

Feel free to go to Your Heavenly Father and ask Him for your daily needs, for you and your family. He loves you and wants to care for you.  (And don’t forget to PRAISE Him with Thanksgiving!)

Prayer: Father God, thank You for caring about my needs—little to You, but at times, great to me. Thank You! Amen.
