Day 31 | I KNOW MY SHEEP AND MY SHEEP KNOW ME
I KNOW MY SHEEP AND MY SHEEP KNOW ME

John 10:14-16
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father … I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.”

Continuing with Jesus’ teaching about us using the analogy of sheep, it seems that Jesus was also clearly saying that He knows His sheep and His sheep know Him. Back in the day, the shepherd of a flock would talk to and maybe even sing to his sheep. They would get used to his voice and it was comforting. Whether they were walking, grazing, or gathering to sleep at night, the sheep heard the shepherd and felt safe and secure.

Consider a baby or young child. That little one recognizes his mother’s voice (and probably dad’s too), and during times of pain or fear, mom’s voice can be comforting, soothing, and even healing. That child feels safe and secure and – even if sick or injured – they can calm down and get the rest they need.

I’m not sure the disciples fully understood what Jesus was saying here, but Jesus was also pointing out that there were others—besides the twelve—who needed to be brought into His fold as well. It was an early teaching that Jesus mentioned at the end of the book of Matthew: "Go into all the world and make disciples."

How about you? Do you recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd? We believe that He speaks to us today through His Word and His Spirit and that He wants to guide us, love us, comfort us, and be our Shepherd.

Prayer: LORD, I hear Your voice in the Scripture and when I am still, and I know that You are God. Thank You for Your care for me. Amen.
