NEW IN CHRIST
Colossians 3:1-2, 10
“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth … and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him”
The Apostle Paul knew what he was talking about when he wrote about CHANGE and becoming NEW. Consider Paul – formerly Saul – persecutor of Christians and hater of Jesus and all He stood for. THEN, he met Jesus and was entirely changed from persecutor to apostle/evangelist/church planter and used by God to write 13 of the 27 books of the New Testament.
If Paul had been your friend before he met Christ, do you think you would have seen a change in him after that experience? (Of course!) In what ways?
Paul, in this letter to the church folks at Colossae, teaches some essential points.
As Followers of Jesus, as people who believe in Him, we were figuratively "raised with Christ" and thus should be thinking about ("setting our minds on") “things ABOVE, not on things on the earth.” We should think about God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It's as though we've changed coats… removed the old, and put on the new.
Paul says we should put on the "NEW SELF," which is being RENEWED daily because of our access to the true knowledge about God the creator.
This section has a lot to unpack, but let me simplify.
By being "born again," you and I are to be different. We are NEW in Christ. We have become a "child of God" and made spiritually alive in Christ!
The Message version says it like this… "So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, ACT like it." So, "Set your mind on things above” and “put on the NEW SELF.”
Prayer: LORD, please remind me daily to put on the NEW SELF and not fall back into the old ruts. Thank You, Amen.
