Day 22 | SALTY?
SALTY?

Matthew 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

Imagine you’re in the crowd listening to Jesus during what would become known as the “Sermon on the Mount.” It’s a large crowd, remaining perfectly quiet so all could hear the voice of the Rabbi from Galilee who was speaking without the aid of today’s amplification.

Then Jesus says: “You are the salt of the earth.”

Consider that people in the past likely perceived things somewhat differently than we do today. Today, “salt” mainly suggests flavor in our food. However, back then people would have had greater concerns. They may have been focused on the common practice of preserving food with salt or reflecting that salt was often used for disinfecting wounds or in ceremonial offerings. Salt also symbolized loyalty and faithfulness in relationships and was even used by some as currency. (The word “salary” originally comes from SALT, which some believe is why Roman soldiers were paid in salt; it was that valuable.)

Here, it seems that Jesus was teaching His followers to use their saltiness in the world positively, preserving goodness and adding value, much like salt enhances flavor. He emphasized the importance of living out one’s faith in a way that influences and benefits society.

Today, we can achieve the same by promoting kindness, love, and righteousness. We should not hide our faith but instead allow it to inspire those around us.

Prayer: LORD, help me to be like SALT where I live and in the lives of others.  Help me NOT to lose my saltiness, but to live in a way pleasing to You. Amen.
