Day 28 | HOW TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR

HOW TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR
Matthew 22:39-40
“And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (NIV)
This is the second part of Jesus’ response to the Pharisees regarding “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Sometimes I think that today – in the 21st century – we don’t truly appreciate the significance of some of the answers Jesus gave to the religious elite of His time.
But back then, the religious leaders were not as concerned with LOVE among the Jewish crowd as they were with “obedience” of the Jews to the Jewish Leaders and their teachings.
Jesus undoubtedly experienced this repeatedly in similar situations. Furthermore, Jesus taught that “God is love” and that He was our Heavenly Father… a concept completely unfamiliar to the Jews and their teachers and leaders (Pharisees and Sadducees). Jesus said they were to approach God as “Our Father Who art in heaven,” as He had already explained before this encounter.
Jesus was very clear to the leaders then… as He is to us today. God is love, and we are called to be loving, kind, considerate, forgiving, and patient with our brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s easy to become a bit “pharisaical” or self-righteous with others today too, so this is a good verse to remind us.
Romans 5:8 reminds us: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Jesus not only taught that we must love one another, but He also demonstrated it. And we are called to be Christlike.
Prayer: LORD, Thank You for loving me. Help me to show love to others by being patient and kind, following Your guidance. Amen.
