Day 08 | PREPARATION BEFORE PRAYING
PREPARATION BEFORE PRAYER

Matthew 6:6
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
(ESV)

Jesus begins an important section here, teaching his followers how to PRAY.

Prayer seems simple, doesn’t it, and you might wonder… “Why would I need to be taught HOW to pray? I’ve been praying since I was little, and my parents taught me a bedtime and mealtime prayer.”

But Jesus felt His followers NEEDED the instruction, and so do we.

Step One: get alone with God and pray in secret. It doesn’t really matter if you’re in your room, or under a tree, or on the beach; the KEY is… alone with the LORD.

We live in a VERY busy world. Our technology has sped things up tremendously, and few followers carve out ANY time for God on a daily basis. And if we pray, it’s often a quick one, then out the door.

We need to learn HOW to “be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) And that stillness is especially beneficial when we pray.

Let me ask: when was the last time you really got alone with the LORD for even FIVE minutes? No phone, TV, music, no other people … just alone with Him and perhaps meditating on a favorite verse of the Bible?

We live in a VERY noisy world today – and Christians are not immune from the noise and distractions.

Jesus is instructing us to GET AWAY from the noise, the people, the distractions, “shut the door” behind you… and prepare to talk to your Heavenly Father.

Prayer: LORD, help me to remember this initial pre-step in prayer – and to practice it at least from time to time in my prayer time with You. Amen.
