LIVING MORE LIKE JESUS
Matthew 5:5
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
The Amplified Bible puts it this way: “Blessed (happy, blithesome, joyous, spiritually prosperous—with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the meek (the mild, patient, long-suffering), for they shall inherit the earth!”
In the Sermon on the Mount, while talking to the crowd, Jesus said things that turned their expectations upside down. While the powerful chase after power, prestige, recognition, money, and dominance, He was lifting up the humble, the lowly, and the meek while promising them a lasting inheritance.
Jesus was teaching that meekness is not weakness; rather, it is the disciplined restraint that keeps the heart soft toward God and others. It is the quiet confidence that comes from trusting God’s ultimate justice rather than our own force.
Charles Spurgeon captured this paradox beautifully: “The meekness of Christ is the great secret of His power.”
In the world today, pride (“my way or the highway”) is a KEY reason so many argue, disagree, and fight; the results of which can be seen on the TV or in the news daily.
Consider asking yourself that familiar question: “What would Jesus do?” Often the answer is simple… listen more, speak less and extend grace. In doing so, you plant seeds of peace that God can grow: relationships healed, hearts softened, and a world subtly transformed by the quiet strength of humility.
The Sermon on the Mount presented Jesus’ crowd with a different way, a Jesus way, of living differently in a world full of the powerful, wealthy, and proud. Jesus lived as He taught, and as Spurgeon said, “The meekness of Christ is the great secret of His power.”
Prayer: LORD, help me to learn to add more meekness to the way I live. Amen.
