40 Days with Jesus (Red Letter Edition)
Day 01 | THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS

I’m entitling this new series of devotionals “40 Days with Jesus the Red Letter Edition” because we are going to focus on the words Jesus actually spoke which are often printed in Bibles in RED LETTERS, thus this "Red Letter Edition"!
THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS
Matthew 22:34-40
“But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?’
Jesus said to him, ‘“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’”
As we begin this 40 Days with Jesus (“Red Letter Edition”), imagine that you are one of the disciples following Jesus… and remember that besides the 12 disciples, there were another 70-120 people who followed Him, heard his teaching, witnessed His miracles, and learned from Him.
Here, Jesus is answering a KEY question from one of the Pharisees. This was clearly a not-so-veiled attempt to trip Jesus up in front of a crowd of Jews. Jesus’ answer was, of course, brilliant.
Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 10:12 and 30:6 from the Torah to answer the question, demonstrating His knowledge of the Scriptures.
1. “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, and mind,” and
2. “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
THEN Jesus added, “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Meaning: You can boil ALL the Jewish laws down to these two commandments.
Question for YOU… How well do YOU DO what Jesus said?
Prayer: LORD, what you said is challenging. Help me evaluate how honestly I live these verses and improve as You lead. Amen.
