THE WAY, THE TRUTH, THE LIFE
John 14: 1, 5-6
“’Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.’
Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
It’s been said that even people back then who didn’t believe like Jesus, liked Jesus. And why not? He encouraged people to “Let not your heart be troubled.” And people today – as in every day – are troubled, upset, worried, concerned, or fretful about something happening in their world.
But Jesus goes further: “Believe in God, believe also in me.” Still, pretty OK to most who hear those words.
But then there’s verse six when Jesus claims: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me.”
That makes many people I have talked to upset. The exclusivity of Jesus. He just shut out ALL other religions – past, present, future – as avenues to God (and most religions – but not all – believe in some “god” or divine entity.)
“I am” – Jesus is the ONLY one. “I am” – what God called Himself when talking to Moses. Jesus is applying that label to Himself.
“The way” – not “a way” but “the only way”.
“The Truth” – Many today think truth is whatever you want it to be. Jesus was teaching that He is the ONLY truth.
“The Life” – Though Jesus was facing His own death, and though it sounds contradictory, He is claiming to be the source of all life. (And the resurrection proved it!)
No one – and that means NO ONE – comes to Father God BUT through Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for the clarity You spoke here. It’s a helpful reminder in a world of multiple choices. Amen.
