Day 13 | FORGIVING OTHERS
FORGIVING OTHERS

Matthew 6:12
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

Now, Jesus begins to intervene in our lives with this statement. You see, it’s one thing to be forgiven for our mistakes, but quite another when we are asked to forgive others' wrongs against us.

Jesus is instructing his crowd – and us today – to be forgiving.

We live in such an energized, self-centered world that even a simple insult or just cutting someone off in traffic could lead to a violent reaction, up to and including the insulted person actually killing the other. (Can you say “Road Rage?”) It’s hard to believe, but it happens.

Here, Jesus is not referring to financial debts, but a look at the parallel teaching of “The Lord’s Prayer” in Luke 11 makes it clear that Jesus is talking about spiritual trespasses or “sins” that we have incurred or received.

Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” And as I have taught in church many times, what does “all” mean? “All means all, and that’s all, all means.” (So that means YOU… and me too.)

We are all debtors to God for breaking His laws. This part of Jesus’ “Lord’s Prayer” is VERY important as He expands on it and repeats it in the statements that follow.

Matthew 6:14-15 says, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Forgiving isn't easy; but remember something else I often say: “God never asks us to do anything that isn't ultimately for OUR good and HIS glory.”

Prayer: LORD, thank You for all Your forgiveness toward me. Lead me on when and how to forgive others Amen.
