HOW TO LOVE GOD
Matthew 22:34-38
“Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied: ‘“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment.’”
The Pharisees—who were self-righteous and trying desperately to trip Jesus up—tested Him with a question. Keep in mind that there were 613 laws that were part of the Jewish Scriptures, and choosing just ONE would seem extremely difficult. Yet Jesus—the Son of the Living God—answers it effortlessly, and in doing so, silences the Pharisees, who then became afraid to ask Him any more questions.
The application for us today is the same as it was then: we are to love the LORD God with all that we have… all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength. (A cross reference from Mark 12 adds the word “strength”.)
Jesus’ quote is from the SHEMA (Old Testament Deuteronomy 6).
We are to LOVE GOD completely and with ALL that we have.
As a pastor, I have had the privilege of officiating many weddings. The people are different and each couple's festivities are unique, but one thing remains the same: the focus during the ceremony and the vows on ongoing love and fidelity.
That is what Jesus is teaching here. We are to love the LORD God with “ALL” that we have: heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Perhaps reflecting on how we are to love in MARRIAGE will remind us that our LORD God expects nothing less from us.
Prayer: LORD, I love You. Help me deepen that love and remember Your teachings here. Amen.
