RESTORED JOY
Psalm 51:10-12
“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.” (NLT)
David wrote this psalm after Nathan, the prophet, confronted him with his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband.
David came to his senses, repented, and begged the LORD to restore his relationship to Him. This is ONE reason why the Lord called David a “man after my own heart.” NOT because he was perfect, but because he sought God.
I sometimes talk about the “Christians Bar of Soap,” 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sin He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
THANKFULLY, our Heavenly Father loves us like He did David and – as we would our own children – is quick to forgive if sincerely asked.
David clearly wants a renewed, clean heart and wants his JOY of salvation to be preeminent again.
How about you? If you’re not experiencing the JOY that you should be, might it be because of unrepented sin? Maybe you’re just hoping the bad feelings will “go away,” and yet deep inside, I think we all know if we need to “repent” (turn around) and ask for forgiveness.
If your relationship with the LORD seems stale or distant, MAYBE it’s because you have some cleaning up to do. Let me suggest: DO IT NOW. Make today’s verses YOUR prayer.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for loving me, even when I miss the mark. Amen.
