STAY CLEAN
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Did you take a bath or shower recently? (I'm sure you did!) Why? Well, most of us would answer "habit." But, upon further reflection, we would admit that we needed it. We might not have been filthy, but we know how we feel when we skip it for a day, and really don't like that feeling.
Now, for children, it's something we have to teach them, as many of them could go for days without taking a bath. (Right parents?)
So, what is this verse from God's Word trying to teach us?
John – now an old man – realizes that none of us is completely like Jesus yet, and so we “miss the mark” (sin) from time to time. We should not want to sin, but it happens. And at times like that, we don't need to be re-saved, but we do need cleansing.
When we sin, we need to ask forgiveness from our Heavenly Father.
Spurgeon said, “The text means just this – Treat God truthfully, and he will treat you truthfully. Make no pretensions before God, but lay bare your soul, let him see it as it is, and then he will be 'faithful and just to forgive you your sins and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness.'”
I call this verse the “Christian's Bar of Soap,” and we ALL need it from time to time. But be careful not to treat God's Grace as a "sin as often as you want" card. The LORD will see right through that. Be sincere, agree with the Lord, confess your sin, and ask His help in not repeating it.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for Your infinite grace and offer of forgiveness. Amen.
