Day 16 | HAPPINESS, JOY AND THANKSGIVING
HAPPINESS, JOY, AND THANKSGIVING

Deuteronomy 16:13-15
“Another celebration, the Festival of Shelters, must be observed for seven days at the end of the harvest season after the grain is threshed and the grapes have been pressed. This will be a happy time of rejoicing together with your family and servants … It is a time of deep thanksgiving to the Lord for blessing you with a good harvest, and in so many other ways, it shall be a time of great joy.”
(TLB)

The Festival of Shelters was a holiday celebration that God established for His people to be happy and rejoice together over the Lord’s blessings of a good harvest and in “many other ways.”  It was a time of thanksgiving and great joy!

G.K. Chesterton wrote, “As long as that word (holiday) remains, it shall always answer the ignorant slander which asserts that religion was opposed to human cheerfulness; that word will always assert that when a day is holy, it should also be happy.”

Thanksgiving in America is modeled after the 1621 harvest feast shared by the Pilgrims and their neighbors, the Wampanoag people. The colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating “thanksgivings” as days of prayer and thanksgiving to God for His blessings.
Under this The Continental Congress of the US proclaimed a national time of Thanksgiving upon enacting the US Constitution.

Later, President Lincoln, in October 1863, declared a National Day of Thanksgiving on November 26; today, we celebrate it on the 4th Thursday of November each year.

The point is, whether we realize it or not, our Thanksgiving Day celebration was patterned after this much earlier celebration or Thanksgiving celebrated by God’s children in the time of Moses.

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Prayer: LORD, I am seeing more and more how my being THANKFUL to You will also increase my JOY in life. Thank You for that simple formula and for helping remind me. Amen.
