Day 15 | A HAPPY HEART

A HAPPY HEART
Proverbs 17:22
“A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” (AMP)
This familiar yet straightforward verse was – I am pretty sure – the stimulus for the Reader's Digest column: "Laughter, the Best Medicine."
So, what is God trying to say to us today through Solomon's writing of this Proverb?
The Hebrew word used here is "sameach" (pronounced saw-may'akh) and is translated as joyful, glad, merry, or happy.
So, it appears that Solomon – arguably the wisest man ever to walk the earth – was trying to teach us the HEALTH benefits of being joyful, happy, glad, or merry!
Jonathan Edwards said: "The beholding of God's happiness will increase the joy, to consider that he is so happy who is so much the object of his love. That love of God in those who shall see God will cause them exceedingly to rejoice in the happiness of God."
Let me suggest another way to look at today's verse. Do YOU have a child, a pet, a spouse, a sibling, or a close friend you love? Do you want them to be healthy? Why? (Because you LOVE them, care about them, right?) Ponder our LORD God. He knows YOU. He LOVES you. He wants you to be as happy as possible, too, right? Thus, the Holy Spirit directed Solomon to write this verse to make the connection between our emotions and our health.
Catch the last half of this verse: a "broken spirit dries up the bones" or "makes one sick" or saps a person's strength, and so on, depending on your translation. Heed today's verse… it will make a difference in your life.
Prayer, LORD, thank You for the wisdom of this verse. Help me to apply it to my daily life. Amen.
