Genesis 1:26
“Then God said, let Us make man in our image.”
After God created the world, light, sun, moon, stars, plants, and animals, He came around to creating mankind.
Today's powerful ten words tell us much.
“Then God said” – “God” in the Hebrew is Elohim, which is the plural form of God (Eloah). This refers to the Trinity… Father, Son, and Spirit. A further emphasis of the Trinity is the use of "us" and "our" – “Let US make man in OUR image.”
One of the most challenging concepts in the Bible is the Trinity. We believe there is only ONE God (Deuteronomy 6:4 – "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one"), but He has three "personalities" – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. All three were involved in the Creation of the world.
John 1:1-3 is essential: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” This verse refers to Jesus Christ.
John 1:14 says: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
So, God the Father, Son, and Spirit (read Genesis 1:2) were all involved in Creation.
Today's BIG takeaway from Genesis 1:26 is that God decided to create us – we people – in His (their) image; not elephants, tigers, or eagles, but just we human beings. We are the ONLY piece of the Creation onto which God imparted His image, His likeness. Now, WE are not God, but we have His image on us and should live up to that heritage.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for creating me in Your image. Forgive me for all the times I have NOT lived UP to my heritage. Help me through Your Spirit to become more and more like Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
