BE VERY CAREFUL
Ephesians 5:15-17
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” (NIV)
Once again, the Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul to write words then... that are still relevant to us today.
Understand that Paul and the church folks in Ephesus lived during difficult times for them as followers of Jesus. Thus, the reason Paul uses the strong language of “… days are evil.” Other translations say “difficult days” or “days are filled with evil.”
People today sometimes miss the fact that our world has changed and is changing. Anyone over a certain age can remember times when churches were more influential and people generally respected “the man upstairs” and “the good book,” whether they were Christians or not. It wasn’t long ago that city council meetings started with a Bible-based devotional and prayer.
Today, though, we must make the most of “every opportunity” to live and act wisely, even if others reject that wisdom.
Further, Paul seems to be encouraging the Believers in Ephesus (and us as well) NOT to do anything foolish that would give unbelievers “ammunition” for NOT believing in the God we believe in or in Jesus whom we claim to be followers of.
The Amplified says verse 17 this way: “Therefore do not be foolish and thoughtless, but understand and firmly grasp the will of the Lord.”
Keep this also in mind: We are in a WAR. Good and bad. Light and darkness. God’s will vs. Satan’s. We are in the war and need to keep our armor ON (Eph 6), stay prayed up, and seek the LORD for wisdom as to HOW to live in this broken, messed up world.
Prayer: LORD God, I need Your wisdom. Every day, I’m faced with choices that could be wise or foolish. I desire to KNOW what Your will is for me. Speak to, lead, and help me know and follow you better. Amen.
