Day  37 | REPENT OR BE DESTROYED
REPENT OR BE DESTROYED

Zephaniah 1:14-18
“That terrible day of the Lord is near. Swiftly it comes — a day of bitter tears, a day when even strong men will cry out. It will be a day when the Lord’s anger is poured out. Down go the walled cities and the strongest battlements! ‘Because you have sinned against the Lord …  Your silver and gold will not save you.’”
  (NLT)

Like the other prophets, Zephaniah was sent by the LORD to His people to try, once again, to warn them.

I know, as we get near the end of the study in the Old Testament and are in prophets, it seems as though if you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all.

It’s funny (well, not really) how much, like God’s people back then, we are today (minus all today’s technology). In and around 1776, our national leaders felt in need of PRAYER and God’s providential favor.   Today, our leaders – and much of the nation – feel self-sufficient and secure. Many today think because we are one of, if not THE wealthiest nation in the world, and our military might is top-rate, that we are safe and secure and can ignore God and trample on His laws, His principles, and His Words … and suffer no consequences.

Well, God’s people in Israel back then felt the same way. They thought they had outgrown the need for God’s help and leadership and would just do what they thought best instead.
It reminds me of Judges 21:25 – “In those days, Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.”

In the days of Zephaniah, the prophet, Israel HAD a king, but the people (and the human king) did what seemed right in their own eyes without asking the LORD if HE was ok with it.

I entitled this devo “Repent or Be Destroyed.”  Rather harsh, but a summary of the book.

My application… we would be wise to LEARN from the past. Individually and as a nation, we must repent (turn around) or be destroyed.

Prayer: LORD, I and my family choose to follow YOU. Forgive our mistakes and guide us with Your Word and Your Spirit. Amen.
