Day 38 | JESUS APPEARS TO HIS DISCIPLES | from John 20
JESUS APPEARS TO HIS DISCIPLES

from John 20
“Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, ‘I have seen the Lord!’ Then she gave them his message.  That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.  Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! ‘Peace be with you,’ he said.  […] ‘As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.’ Then he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’  […] Then Jesus told him, ‘You believe because you have seen me.  Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.’  The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.”

Jesus raised the value and place of women like no other religion.  Thus, women were the first to the tomb and to know that it was empty and Mary was privileged – by Jesus – to tell the disciples.

Of note is that they (the disciples) were meeting behind closed doors out of fear for their lives.  Thus, when Jesus arrives, he says, “Peace be with you.”  Then, Jesus commissions them – sends them – to minister in His name and tells them to “receive the Holy Spirit.” Jesus knew that w/o the Spirit, they would NOT be able to complete the tasks Jesus gave them.  “Go and make disciples” (Matt 28:19)

Then in a verse that looks to the future and sees you and me, He says to “Doubting Thomas” – “You believe because you have seen me.  Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

John ends his book with: “But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.”

Prayer: LORD, I do believe that YOU are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.  Thank You for giving me the right to become a child of God.  Amen.
