ETERNAL LIFE

John 5:21-24
“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.  Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”

Yesterday we talked about Jesus’ healing of the lame man by the pool of Bethesda, which made the Jewish leaders angry. They didn’t care about the man, just their man-made rules.

So, Jesus continues to agitate them by pointing out their hypocrisy and then making it clear that He is the Son of God and thus equal with the Father. Further, that He (the Son) has been given the power to judge others.

Many struggle with the theological concept of “the Trinity,” where God is one (yes, He is), but also that He is three persons – Father, Son, and Spirit. In this fifth chapter of John verses 11-47, Jesus Christ declares His deity in five incredible statements.

Jesus Christ says – and then explains – that He is equal with God:
1.  In His person (vv. 17-18)
2.  In His works (vv. 19-20)
3.  In His power and sovereignty (v. 21)
4.  In His judgments (v. 22)
5.  And in His honor (v. 23)

In verse 24, Jesus again explains His desire for all to have eternal life. “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”

Prayer: Lord, YOU are God. You came in the flesh, but You are God, and I believe in You – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
