Day 38 | SHALOM AND JESUS | Isaiah 9:6
SHALOM AND JESUS

Isaiah 9:6
“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
(NKJV)

Many reading (or listening) to this verse will quickly identify it with the Christmas story.  It was a prophecy about the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to earth.  I’ve heard this MANY times and have used it when preaching and teaching in church about Advent.

However, re-reading the Word of God, aka The Bible, can bring new insights and deeper understanding.

Thus, this week – as we near the end of our “40 Days of Peace” – you may notice I’m focusing on the Hebrew Word SHALOM.  I’ve observed that in the Hebrew (the original language in which the Old Testament was written), the last phrase in today’s verse about the coming of Jesus actually reads, “Prince of SHALOM.”

Shalom in Hebrew means MORE than just “peace.”  It means more than simply “the absence of conflict.”  It also means wholeness, safety, wellness, prosperity, and completeness.

Author Tim Keller wrote: “His work as the Prince of Shalom means complete reconciliation, a state of the fullest flourishing in every dimension – physical, emotional, social and spiritual.”

Shalom is introduced in the Garden of Eden – the way it was supposed to be – and will be made perfect in the New Jerusalem, as mentioned in Revelation.

Greeting one another with the one word “Shalom” is, in reality, offering a fantastic blessing of hope for the one to whom it is spoken… and thus is usually reciprocated.

Our LORD Jesus is indeed the “Prince of Shalom.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank YOU for offering us the SHALOM that passes all understanding.  Thank You for YOU… for offering us forgiveness, new life, and shalom. Amen
