40 Scriptures to Shape Your Faith
Day 37 | James 4:7
James 4:7
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
(NKJV)
James presents a TWO-STEP strategy for spiritual warfare. First, “SUBMIT to God” … yield your life to His authority. Second, “RESIST the devil” … stand firm against his lies. Notice the little word at the beginning: "Therefore." In light of everything James just said about God giving greater grace, the SEQUENCE matters. Resistance without submission is SELF-effort; submission without resistance is weakness.
Here's what I've learned: we can't resist the devil on our own. We just CAN'T. He's smarter than you, has been at this for thousands of years, and knows your weak spots. But when we’re SUBMITTED to God – walking in obedience and staying close to Jesus – the devil has NO foothold.
The promise is POWERFUL: the devil “WILL flee.” Not "might" or "sometimes." But WILL. He's not invincible. Satan THRIVES on compromise but RETREATS from those committed to Christ. We don't fight FOR victory… we fight FROM victory already won by Christ.
SUBMISSION gives authority. Resistance exercises it. It's like the school buses in our area that occasionally need to flash their STOP LIGHTS when letting students on or off. The bus driver’s authority comes from the government, and the driver is in SUBMISSION to that higher power while doing their job. The effectiveness comes from the bus driver actually turning ON the flashing light, checking traffic, and then letting students on or off. All NECESSARY.
Let me ask: What temptation has been harassing you lately? First, submit to God and yield that area to Him. THEN resist. Speak the truth. Stand firm. The enemy MUST flee.
That's not my opinion — that's God's PROMISE.
Quote: "The devil trembles at the submitted soul."
— John Owen (Puritan Pastor)
Prayer: Lord, I SUBMIT my life afresh to Your authority. Give me COURAGE to resist the enemy, knowing he must flee before You. Amen.
