Day 23 | LITTLE CHILDREN AND JESUS

LITTLE CHILDREN AND JESUS
Matthew 19:14
“But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.’” (NKJV)
Here we see Jesus teaching that children are important to Him. Although they are apparently too young to have personally exercised faith in Him as Savior (Luke refers to them as “infants”), Christ still uses them as an illustration “of such” to mean those who make up heaven.
The Gospels often depict God showing special mercy to those who, because of age or mental deficiency, cannot exercise either faith or willful unbelief. That’s why many pastors – including myself – would say when asked, that if a child dies, “that child is instantly with the Lord.”
Additionally, Jesus was teaching His followers to let the children come to Him, see Him, touch Him, and speak with Him. He cared for them and wanted them to know Him personally, just as He does each of us.
Jesus also seems to believe that WE adults need to become like children by showing qualities like humility, innocence, and trust. We are called “Children of God” (John 1:12), but many want to control their own salvation instead of recognizing that “Jesus is Lord” and in charge.
To their credit, the disciples apparently believed they were protecting Jesus’ time from being taken by little children, but Jesus made it clear that children are just as important as anyone and are invited to come near to Him.
Here’s a question: how much like a little child are you in your relationship with the Lord Jesus? I like to remind myself and often say: “He’s God, and I’m not.” He knows everything, He is all-powerful, and my relationship with Him is quite similar to Jesus’ relationship with these little children… full of faith, hope, trust, and love.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for redeeming me like a little child. And compared to You, I am. Amen.
