Day 17 | I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE
I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE

Matthew 6:32-35
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ Then they said to Him, ‘Lord, give us this bread always.’ And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’”

Jesus taught many things during his “Sermon on the Mount.” The most difficult concept for His Jewish audience to understand was that things were changing now that Jesus, the promised Messiah, had arrived.

Here, Jesus reminds them that, in Moses’ time, the Lord provided the children of Israel with physical bread (manna), which was temporary and perished. This was only a shadow of the True Bread to come, (Jesus Christ) Who would bring spiritual and eternal life to the world.

His audience then couldn’t understand that He was teaching that the time of “Moses-type, temporary bread” was over, but that HE – the promised Messiah – would supply their needs.

Finally, Jesus had to speak very clearly: “I am the bread of life.”

John documented seven significant instances when Jesus spoke of Himself with the phrase “I am,” then proclaimed His deity and His connection to mankind as Savior. We saw one a few days ago — “I am the way, the truth, and the life” — and now a second one... “I am the bread of life.”

Ponder that Jesus Christ came to supply all YOUR needs, too… in body, mind, and spirit.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to ponder these “I am” statements deeply as I learn from Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
