40 Days in the Book of John
Day 22 | NEVER PERISH

NEVER PERISH
John 10:14, 27-30
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
Have you ever felt insecure? I mean, is there anything in your life that you can depend on 100%?
As we continue to read here in John, Jesus continues to teach that HE is the “Good Shepherd” (a perfect illustration for the 1st century). A good human shepherd, back then, would know his sheep and they would know him. He knew which of his sheep were timid or bold, fast eaters or slow, considerate of others or all in for themselves.
On the other hand, the sheep would recognize their shepherd; his voice, his smell, his appearance, his rod and staff. And because they KNEW and trusted their shepherd, they followed him.
Psalm 23 talks about this too: “The Lord is my shepherd … He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside the still waters, He restores my soul.”
Back to John 10, Jesus is teaching about the security of His sheep. “…eternal life … never perish … no one will snatch them out of my hand ….”
Let me say to you that is the kind of relationship Jesus wants to have with YOU too. It’s not an “iffy” kind of thing, but one that is personal, secure, and everlasting.
Trust Him. Receive Him. Listen to His voice. Follow Him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being MY Shepherd. Help me get better at listening for your voice and then following You and forgive me for all the times I haven’t. Amen.
