MUSIC AND SINGING IN CHURCH
Ephesians 5:18-20
“Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Do you know anyone who needs happiness or joy in their lives? (Well, I would say only “Just about everybody!”)
So, especially when we gather with believers, Paul teaches us to speak to one another with music and to give thanks to the LORD for everything.
Have you ever wondered why our church services have music and singing? For most, this is probably the ONLY time in the week when they are encouraged to SING. And yet, we have in Scripture an entire BOOK of Songs (called Psalms) that is a collection of songs through the ages back then.
Today, we have many more songs than the 150 Psalms in our Bibles. Thousands of Christian songs have been written through the years and – like the Psalms before them – they are songs about life and love, God and Jesus, and more. They are “songs from the Spirit” as He leads men and women to write praise and worship songs.
When you go to church, do you sing or just listen?
Many don’t sing. “I don’t sing well,” “I don’t want to scare anyone,” or other excuses are sometimes heard. Yet, Psalm 100 says: “Make a joyful NOISE unto the Lord” – so poor singing doesn’t get you off the hook.
But speaking (or singing) “one to another” – is a key for church. Even if you sing softly, I encourage you to sing. Say (sing) the words and join in with the group. It’s WORSHIP, and all Christians are called to do that. Listening to the teaching message is essential, too, but the teaching is not worship.
Our verses today make it clear that we are to “make music from our heart to the LORD” to give Him THANKS for everything He has done.
Prayer: LORD, help me participate in WORSHIP every time we gather for church. Let those words we sing sink into my Spirit so that I may “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” as Your Word teaches. Amen
