THANKS IN ADVANCE
Psalm 7:17
“I will give thanks to the Lord according to His righteousness and justice, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.” (AMP)
David certainly had his ups and downs, as we are told in the Old Testament. In today’s verse, it appears that things may be going well for him, as he’s thanking and praising the LORD Most High.
But this psalm was written with the backdrop of “Cush, a Benjamite” (another term David used for King Saul), who was trying to kill David. I hope YOU have never had anyone trying to kill you, but David here was fleeing for his life.
Earlier in this psalm, he was pleading to God for deliverance and asking for the LORD’s righteous intervention in this attempt by Saul to fulfill his jealousy and kill David once and for all.
David appeals to the righteous judge, telling the Lord: “God is a just judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he (David was talking about King Saul) does not turn back, He (now he’s talking about God) will sharpen His sword; He bends His bow and makes it ready. He also prepares for Himself instruments of death; He makes His arrows into fiery shafts.” (Psalm 7:11-13).
Of note is that, after his request, David praised and thanked God in today’s verse… EVEN BEFORE God had answered David’s request for protection. “I will give thanks to the Lord according to His righteousness and justice, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.” He was resting in the LORD and depending on His (God’s) righteousness and justice to solve the problem.
What are you holding up to the LORD in prayer? What do you need? I encourage you to ADD your thanks and praise to your requests. Make today’s verse YOUR VERSE as you pray.
Prayer: Dear LORD, thank you for your righteousness and justice. You are my Lord Most High. Amen.
