Day  30 | PRACTICING THE TRUTH
PRACTICING THE TRUTH

Exodus 20:2-3
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.”

We don’t often think about this commandment, the first of the ten, as having to do with TRUTH. But as I was pondering it this morning, I was struck by what accepting God into one’s life through His Son Jesus the Christ, is basically saying: “You are my GOD.”

Much like when we get married and in the ceremony we say to our spouse: , “I take you to be my wedded (husband/wife), to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge myself to you.”

The truth is that we are pledging to have NO OTHER PERSON before our spouse.  To violate that, is to break that trust and the truth that we pledged one to another.

God is saying the same thing to us in this First Commandment.  He reminded the Jews through this commandment what HE had done for them (brought you out of Egypt and slavery).  Then He said: “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Ask yourself: Are there things… or people… or ways you spend your time that you put before the Lord God?  Then, you are not being TRUE to your commitment to Him when you received Christ as Lord and Savior. Making Him LORD is a big deal.

Fortunately, 1 John 1:9 gives us the remedy: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Be TRUE to your commitments – especially that to the God of the Universe.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be TRUE to You. Every day of the week, not just on Sundays.  Help me to put no other gods of any kind before You.  And thank You for forgiving me when I have. Amen.
