PRACTICAL ACTS OF LOVE

1 John 3:18
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

The apostle John, the author of this book called 1st John, had much to the say to the church in his writings many years after he had walked with Jesus, had witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.

John, who was an old man when he wrote this, was concerned that his children – or younger followers of the faith – were not doing what he had written and what Jesus had commanded in John 13.

Jesus said in John 13:34-35 – “A new command I give you, that you love one another as I have loved you and so prove to be my disciples. By this all men will know you are my disciples if you truly love one another.”

Apparently, these Christians were being kind to one another but mostly in words or speech only. John was commanding them to love one another with actions and with truth.

The amplified Bible puts our verse this way: “Little children (believers, dear ones), let us not love [merely in theory] with word or with tongue [giving lip service to compassion], but in action and in truth [in practice and in sincerity, because practical acts of love are more than just words].”

So let me ask… How are you doing?  Are you loving others in a general way or are there one or two or more people that you are being led to love practically… “because practical acts of love are more than just words.”

Words are important. And in these days of fear words can help a lot. But don’t forget the practical help that might also be really very welcome.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see the needs in my church family that are around me. Help me to do a better job of loving one another as You commanded. Amen.
