Day  18 | JESUS AND THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH
JESUS AND THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

John 16:12-15
“There is so much more I would like to say to you, but it’s more than you can grasp at this moment. But when the truth-giving Spirit comes, he will unveil the reality of every truth within you. He won’t speak his own message, but only what he hears from the Father, and he will reveal prophetically to you what is to come. He will glorify me on the earth, for he will receive from me what is mine and reveal it to you. Everything that belongs to the Father belongs to me—that’s why I say that the Div
ine Encourager will receive what is mine and reveal it to you.”

Living in times like these, when what is TRUE seems harder and harder to distinguish, God has provided a way.

We know that God wants us to know the truth. Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) God wants us to be SET FREE from many things, including: lies, rumors, half-truths, evil, demented thinking, anger, discouragement, fear, doubt and worry.

Thus, after 40 days on earth after the resurrection… time He spent talking to people, Jesus returned to heaven in order that the Holy Spirit might come to comfort, guide, and help us.

Here in John, we learn that the Holy Spirit would reveal to us “the reality of every truth.”  HE will guide us into the truth. HE will show us the way.

In our upside down, crazy world today, don’t you wish you knew what was coming and how to prepare.

Well… verse 13 says: “He won’t speak his own message, but only what he hears from the Father, and he will reveal prophetically to you what is to come.”

Jesus didn’t want his followers to be in the dark and so tried to tell them what was coming on numerous occasions.  And just in case you feel like the disciples were a bit “dense” in not getting Jesus’ admonitions about the future, you and I aren’t much better… and we have the entirety of Scripture, old and new, to lean on and glean from.

I like the promise of Jesus in these verses, particularly that the Holy Spirit is going to “unveil the reality of every truth.”

We hear lots of proclamations today about “this is true,” and this is “how things are,” but it’s hard to trust any human outlet, news or other, for “truth” when in reality many are just opinion pieces or partial truths.

God’s word IS truth. God’s Spirit will help guide us into that truth and confirm in our hearts – if we listen – as to what is REALLY true and when what we think we know is true, is actually not.

Prayer: Lord, DO guide me into the truth.  I do want to be FREE by knowing the truth and not by believing lies, half-truths and other people’s opinions.  Lord, guide me, by your Spirit, into the truth and help me live by it with all my heart, soul, mind and strength.  Amen.
