KNOWING TRUTH

John 8:32
“And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”

Today we begin a new series of devotionals which I’m calling “40 days of TRUTH.”

Before we begin, let me share – as I’ve shared in previous “40 Days” – some interesting things about the number 40.

The number 40 has significance in science, literature and in Scripture:
> “Forty” is the only number in English whose letters appear in alphabetical order.
> Minus 40 degrees is the only temperature that is the same in both Fahrenheit and Celsius.
> When the bubonic plague gripped Europe during the Middle Ages, ships would be isolated in harbor for 40 days before passengers could go ashore. The Italian word for 40 is quaranta —hence quarantine.
> Forget nine months… the typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks.
> It took chemists 40 attempts to develop the magic spray we call WD-40.
> “40 winks” is considered the perfect nap.
> 40 hours is the typical American work week.

And on the Biblical side…
> Moses, Elijah and Jesus each fasted in the desert for 40 days.
> The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years.
> Ezekiel was instructed to lay on his right side for 40 days to “bear the iniquity” of Judea’s sins.
> Three great Hebrew kings reigned for 40 years each: Saul, David and Solomon.
> Goliath taunted Israel for 40 days before David defeated him.
> God destroyed every living thing on the Earth by flooding it for 40 days.

And so, we shall consider TRUTH – from the Scriptures – for the next 40 days.

Strong’s concordance shows the Greek “aletheia” (truth) means “reality” as opposed to “illusion.”

In John 18:36-38, we read the exchange between the arrested Jesus and the Roman governor Pilate. The Jews had delivered Jesus to Pilate and wanted him (Jesus) found guilty of a capital crime.  Pilate asks Jesus if he is a king.
“Jesus answered, ‘My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.’  Pilate said, ‘So you are a king?’  Jesus responded, ‘You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.’ ‘What is truth?’ Pilate asked.”

A question which is both simple and profound: “What is truth?”

In the next 40 days of devotionals, my goal is help you become more acquainted with the TRUTH of God and to learn principles which can help you SEE truth/reality in this world… regardless of where the masses may be looking or how loud they may be shouting.

“And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”  (John 8:32)

Prayer: Lord, I desire to SEE YOU more clearly and to know real TRUTH.  The world today is a crazy place and everyone is shouting that they have the truth.  Lord, I believe that YOU are the way, the truth and the life and I am seeking YOU. Amen.
