The POWER of 10
Day  38 | THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

Psalm 23:1
“The LORD is my Shepherd; I have everything I need.”
(GNT)

Probably the most well-known and beloved of the psalms, the 23rd Psalm amazes me. I say that because, as a pastor, I have quoted this (in the King James) to more people than I can count… in hospitals, in rest homes, in church, on their deathbeds, and in Celebration of Life services. And it has always impacted those who have heard it. I’ve quoted it at the death bed of people who were on life support and unconscious and had them physically relax and breathe easier.

Is that because I’m such a great narrator? No. It’s because of the POWER of the Word of God.
In this opening verse, David – who wrote this via the power of the Holy Spirit – makes an opening statement that is glorious and comforting.

“The LORD is our Shepherd.”

I don’t particularly appreciate being compared to a sheep, but we people ARE like sheep.

1 Peter 2:25 says: “For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.”

And in Isaiah 53:6… “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way.”
You need to know that sheep are dumb. They will follow the lead sheep and jump off a cliff. Thus, they really need a guide; they need a shepherd who cares about them.

You and I have such a Great Shepherd – the LORD. (Note the all-caps, meaning God’s formal name: Yahweh.)

Our Great Shepherd knows what we need. He knows your current situation; He knows your emotional, financial, physical, and family situations. Yet since you and I have Him – through receiving Jesus as Savior – we have EVERYTHING we really need. Now I add that “really” because a lot of people – even Christians – figure they need a LOT more than they REALLY need. But our Shepherd has you covered.

As a pastor, I’ve often told my church, “The LORD is MY shepherd. He’s the Great Shepherd, and I am the little shepherd working under Him.”

Learn to see yourself similarly. As a sheep with a Shepherd who wants to guide, lead, and supply.

Prayer: LORD God, YOU are my Shepherd. Thank you, thank you. Amen.
