The POWER of 10
Day  1 | IN THE BEGINNING
IN THE BEGINNING

Welcome to my new devotional series for the new year: The Power of 10.

God doesn’t have to give us the Sermon on the Mount every time He wants to teach us something important; if He chooses, He can do that in just a few words.  In this series, I’ve found some “Biblical sound bites” in God’s Word, which convey His truth in just ten words.  My prayer is that these short passages of Scripture will encourage and help you grow in your faith and walk with the Lord, and maybe you’ll even choose to memorize one or more of them.  (I mean, come on, they are only TEN words, right?)  My wife and I have prayed for YOU, the reader (or listener), of these Biblical Sound Bites from God’s Word and that the Lord will use them to produce Spiritual FRUIT and GROWTH in your life.

Genesis 1:1
“In the Beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

This is the most logical place for us to start this series. Furthermore, this verse is one of my TOP candidates for the MOST IMPORTANT VERSE IN THE ENTIRE BIBLE. It’s where everything starts.

Throughout history, men have been trying to explain and figure out our world… how it got here, where it is going, how old things are, is there a “Who?” and on and on.

The Bible would be incomplete and even confusing without the Book of Genesis, and Genesis would be incomplete without Chapter 1. Genesis gives us vital information about our universe and solar system, life, humanity, marriage, good and evil, the personality and personhood of God, the promise of the Messiah, language, government, nations, religion, and much more.

Many philosophers and thinkers have asked this fundamental question: “Since there is something, instead of nothing, why?”

Genesis 1:1 answers that simple yet profound question. There is SOMETHING because God created it.

It’s been said – and I concur – that if you can believe Genesis 1:1, you’ll have no problem believing the rest of the Bible. Those who accept that GOD “created the heavens and the earth” can also believe that He, God, is big enough, powerful enough, and fully capable of doing all the rest that the Bible says that He did and still does.

Many scientists (though not all) purport the “Big Bang” theory. That everything started from a single explosion (the BANG) sometime in the far distant past.

To which I would say: If there was a Big Bang, there had to be a “Big Banger” – the One who “pushed the button” and caused the Bang.   To me, Genesis identifies WHO that was.

Prayer: LORD God, thank You for Genesis 1:1 and for not leaving us in the dark about creation. You don’t explain the details of HOW you did it – which we probably wouldn’t understand anyway – just that YOU did it. And I believe it. Amen.
