Day 23 | WHERE TO FOCUS YOUR THINKING
WHERE TO FOCUS YOUR THINKING

Philippians 4:8
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
(NLT)

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “You are what you think all day long.”    Solomon in the Bible said it first, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)

So here in Philippians, Paul is instructing us (via the Holy Spirit's inspiration) WHERE to focus our thoughts.

We seem to have way more choices today of what to think than in years past. For instance, I can remember when the news was NOT broadcast 24/7, when newspapers came out only once a day, news magazines monthly, and we were not inundated with all the awfulness happening everywhere. Today though – with international news broadcast 24/7 – we know of every problem, every negative thing seemingly ALL the time. We are indeed “full of it.”

Psychologists and counselors try to teach their clients that what they think about affects their moods, shifting emotions, behavioral choices, self-confidence, and feelings of self-worth and self-esteem in all areas of life. Further, that negative thinking can have a lasting – and negative – affect on their health, relationships, life span, and more.

Of course, God knows ALL that psychologists know… and way more. And since He loves us, He has given us – in His Word and at no cost to us (by the way) – the best psychological advice we could ever need.

This verse points to one of the KEYS to healthy living… what to think about.
We need to make ourselves think about things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and anything excellent and worthy of praise (to God).

It may take practice and determination on your part, but with God’s help everyone reading this devotional CAN DO IT. It will make a huge and positive difference as you practice this verse.

Prayer: LORD, once again, thank You for being so practical and positive. Please help me to learn and put this verse into full effect in my life. Amen.
