EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR THE LORD MATTERS
1 Corinthians 15:58
“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” (NLT)
I remember being a kid in Sunday School when some missionary guest speakers were there. All of us kids listened intently to their story of a time in the “jungle” in Africa or the Amazon and their living amongst a tribe and bringing them to Jesus in faith. Wow! Then, I remember raising my hand – along with all the other 3rd and 4th graders – to become a missionary and serve the Lord when we grew up!
And perhaps one or two of the 50-60 kids there that day DID go into missionary service when they grew up, I don’t know. But I suspect that sometimes we think – especially as children – that unless we do something BIG for the Lord, we’re not being good Christians.
But today’s verse written by the apostle Paul gives us a different take.
Paul was encouraging the church folks there to:
First, “Be STRONG and immovable.” Be courageous and stay strong in the face of opposition and discouragement. Stay the course and hang in there. And if you think back and read history, their days were more difficult than ours in terms of living for Jesus.
Next, Paul taught them to “work enthusiastically for the Lord.” You know, there is working … and there is working enthusiastically, in any area. Consistent with other writings of Paul, I would say, work “joyfully as unto the Lord.”
Finally, Paul teaches that “NOTHING they do for the Lord is useless” or too little. For instance, something as minor as encouraging a brother or sister in Christ – which might only take a moment – is approved by God as service to Him!
Prayer: LORD, help me serve You EVERY day in some way. Not because I have to prove myself, but because I love you, which I do. Amen.
