YOU ARE HIS LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
2 Corinthians 3:2
"The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter written in our hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you." (NLT)
Have you ever needed a letter of recommendation from someone? Or perhaps you’ve written one for someone else. Usually, one might need such a letter when applying for something and need someone to vouch for them. That is, it is needed to help convince the reader of the recommendation that you are who you say you are and that you would be an asset to their company or whatever the situation was. You are usually asking the person writing the letter to persuade someone else to do something on your behalf.
In writing to the church at Corinth, Paul was using that technique. But what he was saying went much deeper than just a written letter. He noted that THEY – the people at Corinth and their changed lives – were Paul’s most persuasive testimonial. Their new lives could be seen and read by all men as proof of Paul’s faithfulness and the truth and effectiveness of his teachings.
Now, consider yourself. You’re not a member of that ancient church at Corinth, but you ARE a member of the Body of Christ and represent MORE than just the Apostle Paul. As a follower of Jesus, you are a representative for Jesus wherever you go. When you’re at the store, watching a concert, going to church, or simply interacting with family or friends, YOU are a “letter of recommendation” for Jesus. When people see you, they subconsciously hold you up as a sort of “litmus test” of your faith and your God.
And God is so confident in you that He is willing to let you be HIS “Letter of Recommendation” to those whose lives you touch.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for trusting me to be a representative for You. I’m not sure how good I am at that, but I am committed to doing better. Show me things I need to tweak in my life that will make my testimony – my letter – better, honest, and a true invitation to others to become one of your followers. Amen.
