JESUS AND THE MIRACULOUS CATCH OF FISH

John 21:1-14
“Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. […]Simon Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing.’ ‘We’ll come, too,’ they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, ‘Fellows, have you caught any fish?’ ‘No,’ they replied. Then he said, ‘Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!’ So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ […]
When they got (to shore), they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire and some bread.  ‘Now come and have some breakfast!’ Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord. Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.”

Jesus has risen from the dead, and for the next 40 days, He appeared to many people. One of those group appearances was to the disciples as they were fishing.

This story is one of a miraculous catch of fish on Jesus’ word to “throw out your nets on the right-hand side.”  Now, these guys are experienced fishermen, have been fishing all night, and probably threw the nets on the right side MANY times that night. Yet, they did it again, and WHAM – more fish than they could haul in.

Jesus – God in the flesh – controls the fish in the sea and, in this third appearance to the disciples, has some fun with them and shows that He is their Source.

Prayer: LORD, You are my Source too. And thank You for Your prediction of both your death AND resurrection – and then – for making both happen just as You said. The most miraculous event in all of human history. Amen.
