JESUS – THE BREAD OF LIFE

John 6:35, 37
“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the Bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me, I will never drive away.’”

Compared to us in the 21st century, the people living in Jesus’ time were simple. Therefore, talks about bread, hunger, and thirst would immediately relate to those folks.

Even though we’re not living in an agrarian society, can you see the picture that Jesus is painting with his words?

Of Biblical import is that this is the first of the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus recorded in the book of John.  Jesus is talking very plainly about WHO He is.   (A side note: When asked His name by Moses, God answered: “I Am.”  Jesus is purposely using that term too.)

Bread – especially back then – was essential for life. This is much like (as we discussed a few days ago) when Jesus offered the woman at the well “Living Water.” Jesus is here telling His listeners that HE is THE essential element for life. Then He says: “Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Note the two terms: “come” and “believe.”  We must COME to Jesus and BELIEVE in Jesus. Even back in John 3:16, we read, “whosoever believes in Him shall never perish.“ Believing in His Name, His forgiveness, grace, love, and cleansing; is part 1. But the verb COME indicates a need to DO something too… to act, move, and in some way follow Jesus as Lord.

Then we have the promise: “ALL those the Father gives me will come to me; whoever comes to me, I will never drive away.”

I find this a very reassuring statement from our Lord. He says that our relationship with Him is solid and permanent and will last into eternity.

Prayer: LORD, thank You for being the Bread that we all need. Thank You for the relationship we can have in You – that will last eternally. Amen.
