Pursue Peace

Hebrews 12:14
“In every relationship be swift to choose peace over competition, and run swiftly toward holiness, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.”
(TPT)

Things are so adversarial today.  People are so angry.  People are so divided.
Yet, the Lord – in this section of Scripture – is telling us to focus on and choose PEACE with others.

It’s may seem odd to many to consider PEACE a choice, but it is.  But then… so arguing, being competitive, and wanting to WIN at all costs.

In another Scripture, we are told to “as much as possible, be at peace with all men.”

The author of Hebrews also teaches that we need to “run swiftly toward holiness.”  The NLT translation says: “and work at living a holy life.”

One might ask, “What does holiness have to do with being at peace?”

Here’s the key: Living a holy or sanctified life means that we are allowing the LORD to be the LORD of our life, of our body, mind, and spirit.  And doing that – living a holy life, which means living life the way God intends us to – will eliminate those tendencies to argue with others, which can divide, causing emotional scares and all the rest.

And it starts… with a choice.  A choice to “pursue peace with all people.”

And now, in addition to fewer arguments and “fights” over who is right or wrong, by taking the “high-road,” the “road less traveled,” we have the potential to impact someone for the LORD positively.  When they SEE our ability to live in peace, some will be enticed to learn WHAT the secret to that peace is.  And then, we can point them to HIM.

Prayer: LORD, help me remember this verse, especially when I’m starting to get all wound-up and argumentative about something.  I want to be at PEACE with others, and I know that many around me need YOU. Amen.
