WATCH YOUR MOUTH

Ephesians 5:4
“Let there be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse [obscene or vulgar] joking because such things are not appropriate [for believers]; but instead speak of your thankfulness [to God].” (AMP)

Have you ever heard the phrase: “Be IN the world but not OF the world?”  Well, one might ask, what does that mean, and HOW do you do that?

Consider this…  when we become a Christian, we are “born again.” Additionally, John 1:12 says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”

So then, we are  both “born again” and “children of God.”  Philippians 3;20 tells us also: “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.”

So this verse in Ephesians 5 teaches that, for us, inappropriate sins of the tongue include any speech that is obscene and degrading or foolish and dirty, as well as suggestive and immoral.  All those words out of our mouths bring disgrace on our lord and us.

Today, people are just looking for a reason to discredit Christians, Christianity, and our Lord God. And inappropriate talk – like mentioned here – will do it for most non-Christians. It will allow them to discount us and continue to ignore the Lord.

Then too, many “baby Christians” – who may be struggling as they learn to walk, talk and become followers of Jesus – might be blown away if they were to hear someone older in the faith speak coarsely.

We have a responsibility to the LORD, our neighbors, and one another to fill our mouths with thanksgiving and joy and to be full of praise!

Prayer: LORD, once again, your Word is a Guide to my living, thinking, and talking.  Help me put a watch on my mouth and gently encourage other Believers to do the same.  Amen.
