HOW TO LIVE LONG AND PROSPER

Psalms 34:12-14
“Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.” (NLT)

If you’re a sci-fi Star Trek fan, you’ll recognize the “Vulcan” greeting of “Mr. Spock”: “Live long and prosper.”  Of course, sci-fi is fiction and can be fun but you can’t base your life on it.
But here in God’s Word, written by King David, is TRUTH.  And so, what does David – inspired by the Holy Spirit – have to say to us?

He is giving a short formula, if you will, about how to “live a life that is long and prosperous.”
If this were a business newsletter, you might think that the next piece of advice is how to work hard, study, learn, organize, plan, set goals, and so on.  But this isn’t a business newsletter… it’s a written piece designed to help us to see life from God’s point of view. From – if you will – a Biblical worldview.

Thus, David says the WAY to have that long life and enjoy being prosperous or, as the NIV puts it…  “Enjoy good days,” is to “keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!”  And also to “turn away from evil and do good, search for peace and work to maintain it.”
You know, I’ve taken multiple management, administrative, and business-type classes during my several degree programs, and I’ve NEVER heard any of them suggest that formula!

But God’s Word always works.  You can’t try it today and expect the harvest tomorrow. But be faithful, be consistent, and the harvest WILL come.

Prayer: LORD, once again, your Word gives counter-cultural advice.  But I want to do things Your way. Help me Lord, remind me daily, and I’ll strive to live these words that David wrote. Amen.
