Eternal Life
1 John 2:25
“And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.”

Have you ever listened to a really old guy (or gal) who has some fascinating stories from times past?  The wisdom older people can share is remarkable and seemingly timeless.  They can share about changes they’ve noticed, trends – both good and bad – stories of long past and more.

The book of First John was written by the same John the Apostle who wrote the Gospel of John, Revelation, and first, second and third John.  In this book, John is an old man – the last apostle still alive – and is recollecting things that Jesus said and promised while He was walking on the earth.

This statement is short and clear: “And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.”

Why would John – now probably nearing 100 years of age – believe this?

Because, for 3+ years John and the other apostles followed Jesus listening, watching, experiencing.  They saw the Master in a myriad of situations and heard Him debate the Pharisees, Sadducees, and doubters.  And NOT ONCE did they catch Jesus in a lie.  EVERYTHING He said or predicted came true.

And of course, the BIGGEST deal of all was Jesus’ rising from the dead.  But even after that, John saw many more things which were consistent with what Jesus said and taught.

And so here is a major promise… that He, Jesus Christ, has promised US eternal life.  And “old man John” was emphatic about letting the Christians of his era – and ours – KNOW about this amazing promise which will impact our lives HERE but most of all… for eternity.

Prayer: LORD, I am thankful and I am secure in YOUR promises.  I can’t completely trust anyone else, but I have full trust in YOU that You will fulfill all that you promised. Amen.
