To Tell the Truth
John 14:16-17
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.  He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you” (NLT)

Did you ever watch the old game show, “To Tell the Truth”?  (You can still find it occasionally on old rerun stations.)  It was very popular in its day and I “kinda” remember watching it as a little kid.

Basically, three guests show up and try to stump the panel.  ONE guest is “somebody” or has done something – and the other two not.  They all act like they have and the panel has to guess who is REALLY speaking the truth and thus the two who are lying.

In these verses, Jesus is promising His followers that they will KNOW the Holy Spirit because He will LIVE IN THEM because they RECEIVE him (and the world does not).

I’ve been asked “How will I know if the LORD (through His Spirit) is speaking to me or not?”

Jesus answers that question here… telling His gang that the “world” (those NOT born-again) would not recognize the Holy Spirit but, that WE (who have opened our lives to the LORD), WOULD.  And the reason we will is that the Spirit lives WITH us and IN us.

Once again, the LORD is tying the Holy Spirit to TRUTH and reminding us that the Spirit’s job – in part – is to LEAD US into the TRUTH.

Prayer: LORD, thank You that you have not left us alone here on earth to figure out everything by ourselves.  We live in a complicated world today with more versions of “truth” out there than ever before. But LORD, you said it best when you said that YOU are the Way, the Truth and the LIFE.  May I never forget it.  Amen.
