40 Days of Promise
Day 11 | Forever| Psalm 23:6
Forever
Psalm 23:6
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Our final day of looking at the promises of Psalm 23 gets us to this fantastic promise.
As I’ve discussed before, the PROMISES of God are often provisional.  That is, He will do the “heavy lifting,” but WE must do something too.  In Psalm 23, the something we need to do is ALLOW Him to be our Shepherd.  Allow Him to lead, guide, comfort, protect, anoint, and more!
This final verse assumes that we HAVE made Jesus our LORD and good Shepherd and thus can claim these final blessings or promises.

Surely.”  A strongly affirmative statement from the psalmist (writing under the direction of the Holy Spirit).  Meaning: YOU can count on it!

Goodness and mercy.”  I like to say, “God is good” to my friends and family.  It comes from a deep, abiding TRUST in Him to take better care of me than I would of myself.

Mercy” means the unfailing, steadfast covenant love of God, similar to “grace” in the New Testament.

The NLT says: “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

That should be exciting and comforting.  Another translation says it this way:
So why would I fear the future?  Only goodness and tender love pursue me all the days of my life. Then afterward, when my life is through, I’ll return to your glorious presence to be forever with you!”  (TPT)

It’s no wonder Psalm 23 is so comforting.  I’ve quoted it countless times to people in the hospital, to those convalescing at home, even to folks on their death beds.  I’ve quoted it to people from all different walks of life and I’ve not yet seen anyone who did not relax and be comforted by these words.

The Lord is a marvelous Shepherd.

PRAYER: Lord, thank You for all the great promises you offer us in this Psalm.  I am amazed, thrilled, and comforted. I receive it as a blessing and a guarantee from You. Amen.
